The Queen of the Fair contest again kicks off the annual Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair, held on Friday evening, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. in the entertainment arena.

Eleven contestants are vying for the honor this year, said director Susan Herring.

The contest is open to young women in Wayne County high schools. Phases of competition include casual wear, talent, evening gown and group interview.

In addition to the honor of reigning over the local fair, which runs from Sept. 28 through Oct. 7, there are cash prizes and scholarship money up for grabs from the University of Mount Olive.

The queen receives a $2,000 scholarship, while first runner-up is awarded $1,500 and the second and third runners-up receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.

This year's contestants and their talent include:

*Mackenzie Hinson, 13, a ninth-grader from Brook's Academy, clogging

*Macy Parkhurst, 14, a freshman at Charles B. Aycock, singing

*Courtney Bishop, 16, a senior at CBA, dancing

*Mackenzie Haswell, 16, a junior at Rosewood High, dancing

*Hannah Spier, 15, a junior at CBA, singing

*Maddison Schillinger, 16, a junior at Rosewood, tap dance

*Kourtni Gerken, 15, a sophomore at Wayne School of Engineering, jazz/tumble routine

*Kasey Vann, 16, a junior at Southern Wayne, singing

*Isabelle Richards, 15, a sophomore at Eastern Wayne, flute

*Mackenzie Minchew, 17, a senior at Rosewood, tap dance

*Cheyenne Hill, 14, a sophomore at Southern Wayne, singing.
