A sign marks a lot at the corner of Ash and John Streets where Strickland Insurance Brokers are making plans to relocate.

A Goldsboro-based company with a history that started in the downtown area plans to return to its roots.

The owners of Strickland Insurance Brokers recently purchased a near 1-acre property on Ash Street, at the corner of John Street, in downtown Goldsboro.

"We bought the lot with the plan to move our office complex down there, at some point," said Robbie Strickland, one of the company owners.

Strickland Insurance Brokers is currently leasing space at its 400 Commerce Court location. The Ash Street move will allow the company to own the property and building.

"With all the revitalization downtown, we just wanted to get back down there," Strickland said. "It would be a nice place to put our home office. We've always owned our own buildings and grounds, and we're trying to get back to that."

Strickland Insurance Brokers opened in the city in 1969, originally on Walnut Street, and currently employs 24 people. The company also has an office with six employees in Winston-Salem.

A timeline for the downtown project hasn't been determined, and company officials plan to meet with an architect in about two weeks to start the planning process, Strickland said.

"It would be 2019 before we might even come close to being in that building," Strickland said.

Construction is expected to include a two-story building with a design that matches other property construction in the downtown area.

"We want it to fit into the downtown Center Street area," Strickland said.
