MOUNT OLIVE -- A Walmart employee allegedly stole $350 by placing the money on store gift cards.

According to a report from the Mount Olive Police Department, K'nyam'yshell D'nyse Mathis, 19, of 101 Sunnyside Road, Dudley, placed $100 on a gift card without putting the money in the register around 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18.

The report said Mathis spent $1.05 with the card at the store, located at 308 N.C. 55 W., Mount Olive, 15 minutes later at a self-checkout register. An asset protection manager found shortages in the store's daily revenue to be short $100, and discovered a transaction on the shopping card history.

The manager also noticed the card had been used at Sam's Club later that day.

Mathis placed $250 on a gift card the next day around 2 p.m., but the report said she did not place the money in the register. She then spent $2.48 and $83.06 at a self-checkout register almost four hours later.

The manager reviewed video footage to see Mathis stealing the money, the report said. The manager contacted the police department with the information, and an officer contacted Mathis.

Mathis arrived at the police department Tuesday, Jan. 24. The report said Mathis told the officer she received the gift cards from family. The officer revealed the evidence to Mathis, and she confessed to stealing the money, the report said. Mathis told the officer she was going through hard times and needed the money for gas.

She was arrested and charged with two counts of embezzlement. She was placed in jail under a $3,000 secured bond.
