The Goldsboro Family YMCA is offering the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program later this month to help adults make lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce chances of developing Type 2 diabetes.
The program is an evidence-based program shown to reduce the burden of type 2 diabetes.
Offered in a small group environment for adults at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, officials at the Y said it has proven effective -- reducing the number of new cases of diabetes in the county by 58 percent overall, and by 71 percent in adults over 60
The next program will be held at the YMCA beginning Jan. 30.
It features 25 sessions over the course of the year. Groups meet on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
A trained coach helps participants learn skills to incorporate healthy eating and other behavior changes into their daily lives.
Goals include a reduction in body weight and an increase physical activity to 150 minutes per week.
Eligible participants must be at least 18 years old, have a BMI of 25 or greater and a qualifying blood glucose, A1C or risk assessment.
