MOUNT OLIVE -- Applications are being accepted for the Unity organization's ninth annual Black History Parade to celebrate Black History Month.

The deadline is Jan. 31.

There is no fee to participate in the parade, event founder Sheila Oates said. However, donations are welcome.

The lineup will start at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 25 on Talton Avenue, and the parade will step off at 1 p.m.

March 4 is the rain date.

The route has yet to be finalized, Ms. Oates said.

"We are just getting started," she said.

That includes plans for selecting a grand marshal, Ms. Oates said.

Unity also organizes Sunday in the Park, which is held on the second Sunday in September. The event was also founded by Ms. Oates.

Sunday in the Park has games and inflatables for children and, much like the parade, is designed to build a stronger sense of unity in the Mount Olive community.

For more information about the parade, call Ms. Oates at 919-635-3376, Vicky Darden at 919-658-3961 or Ricky Fair at 919-344-9944.
