Gray receives Order of Long Leaf Pine

Dr. Betty Howell Gray of Charlotte, formerly of Goldsboro, received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for her service to the state and Charlotte-Mecklenburg County.

The award is the highest honor for community service bestowed by the state of North Carolina. Dr. Gray is a native of Goldsboro and has done exemplary service in North Carolina above and beyond the call of duty in her five years after relocating to Charlotte from Bellevue, Washington. She retired from the Seattle Public Schools after serving as a teacher, principal and director for over 35 years.

Dr. Gray is now a consultant to North Carolina National Alliance of Black School Educators, which offers assistance to North Carolina affiliates and other affiliates throughout the country working in partnerships with local and state superintendents.

She received her undergraduate degree from A&T State University and her master's degree and doctorate from the University of Washington and Western Washington University.
