Wayne County Public Schools announced Friday that all public schools will close two hours early in response to Hurricane Matthew bringing heavier rains to the area than first anticipated.
The National Weather Service is calling for between 5 to 10 inches of rain starting today and carrying through Sunday as the storm passes south of North Carolina. Bands of rain and high wind will still sweep across the area as the storm -- if projections hold -- shifts east back out to sea and then loops around to threaten Florida's east coast a second time.
All after school activities had been cancelled days in advance, and all area high school football games were played Thursday night to beat the storm.
