DUDLEY -- Olivia Lancaster, 7, said her mom, Rebecca, picked out her outfit for Thursday night's talent show at the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair, but that she gave her some advice as well.
"I like the pearls," the Wayne Preparatory Academy second-grader said as she played with the string of pearls around her neck. "I told her it had to be a pretty outfit that went with my pretty heels."
"She had very specific shoes. We had to go shop at multiple shoe places," Mrs. Lancaster said pointing to the sparkling silver shoes she was holding. "She needed sparkles."
Olivia won first place in the vocal solo in the K-2 division with her rendition of "Popular."
"It is from 'Wicked.' I picked it because I had a solo in it at StageStruck," she said. "My mom really liked the solo so she thought I should really do the Wayne County Fair. I was practicing weeks for the fair."
The entertainment arena was packed for the 4:30 p.m. show that featured more than 20 students in 13 different entries.
By the time the 7 p.m. talent show for grades 3-5 started it was standing room only. The show featured 38 entries and more than 50 students.
Audience members clapped and yelled for every performer in both shows.
The talent shows continue tonight for grades 6-8 at 4:30 p.m. and grades 9-12 at 7 p.m. at the entertainment arena.
Olivia, the daughter of Kevin and Rebecca Lancaster of Pikeville, said she enjoyed singing and has been singing since she was just 2 or 3 years old.
Olivia said she was not nervous about singing in front of a large crowd because, "I know Jesus is on my side."
It was her first competition, but she said she is ready to do it again.
And while the competition was over, but her trip to the fair wasn't. Olivia said she didn't really care about cotton candy and candy apples.
"I want to play games," she said. "Mom said that I can do anything that I want. I want to go play a game and win a Shopkin. There are like little things that have hairspray or hair brush except they have faces."
Second place in vocal solo was won by Rebekah Brogden, a second-grader at Northeast Elementary, who sang "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," while wearing a World War II costume. Leah Bright, a second-grader at Eastern Wayne Elementary, won third with her rendition of "I'll Be There."
There was a tie for first place in vocal solo in the grades 3-5 division between fifth-graders Leslie Price of Mount Olive Middle School and Reagan Joyner of Northeast Elementary.
Leslie sang "I Dreamed a Dream" while Reagan sang "I Enjoy Being A Girl."
Jenna Cox, a fourth-grader at Grantham Elementary, won second place. She sang "Trust in You."
