The fall semester at Wayne Community College kicked off Thursday, with a preliminary head count of 3,312.
Officials said the enrollment is expected to increase, as registration was extended, as well as upcoming 12-week courses that begin mid-September and eight-week courses as part of "Fall II" slated to begin in mid-October.
"We're pleased that WCC's enrollment is holding steady," Interim President Gene Smith said.
The initial head count for the first day is slightly below the same time last fall, when it was at 3,498.
That is consistent with the state's community college system, which has seen a steady decline for the past four years, a trend that parallels the economy and is attributed to an uptick in jobs, Smith explained.
The college reached peak enrollment in the fall of 2013, when it was at 4,031, but dropped the next fall to 3,568.
