Founding father exhibit opens Saturday

NEW BERN -- The life and work of North Carolina's first native-born governor and a signer of the U.S. Constitution, Richard Dobbs Spaight, will be on display in the form of a variety of letters, images and objects in Tryon Palace's newest free exhibit, "Richard Dobbs Spaight: Legacy of a North Carolina Founding Father."
The exhibit opens to the public Saturday, Aug. 27, inside the Duffy Exhibition Gallery at the North Carolina History Center in downtown New Bern.
In this new exhibit Tryon Palace reexamines the legacy of Richard Dobbs Spaight, from his childhood to the fateful duel with John Stanly in 1802. Through an array of mediums, visitors can take a closer look at Spaight's political career in both state and national politics, as well as his life at home in New Bern.
The work of the Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and their nearly century-long effort to preserve the legacy and resting place of Spaight and his family is also highlighted in the exhibit.
