Workforce development and the local economy will be the focus of an Economic Outlook Hot Topic Luncheon hosted by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Aug. 25.

The event is open to the public and includes a guest panel of state and local business leaders. The luncheon will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Lane Tree Conference Center, at 2317 Salem Church Road.

The cost is $15 for chamber members and $25 for nonmembers.

"This year, we're taking the approach of workforce development and our local economy," said Kate Daniels, president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. "One of the things that needs to be addressed is not only do we want jobs in our community, but we want to make sure that we've got the workforce ready to go to work."

Guest panelists include Sue Breckenridge, executive director of the N.C. Business Committee for Education; Will Collins, N.C. Department of Commerce assistant secretary and N.C. Works executive director; Lew Ebert, North Carolina Chamber president and chief executive officer; and Greg Wildman, SPX Corp. operations director.

"I think this is going to be a good, important discussion," Daniels said.

Registrations are being accepted by the chamber, which can be reached at 734-2241 or lindam@waynecountychamber.com.

Also planned this month is a Legislative Update Breakfast on Aug. 31, which will include participation from Wayne County legislators and a visit by Andrew Heath, state budget director.

The breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Lane Tree Conference Center. The cost is $15 for chamber members and $25 for nonmembers.

Legislators plan to talk about this year's legislative activity and expectations for next year.

Sen. Louis Pate, R-Mount Olive; Sen. Don Davis, D-Snow Hill; Rep. Jimmy Dixon, R-Warsaw; Rep. John Bell IV, R-Goldsboro; and Rep. Larry Bell, D-Clinton will be at the event.

Registrations are being accepted through the chamber, which is located at 308 N. William St.
