A structure fire Sunday night at 102 W. Patetown Road severely damaged the building that houses the Edwar Group, LLC. Goldsboro firefighters were able to get the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes after arriving on scene just before 10 p.m. Sunday night.

A structure fire Sunday night at 102 W. Patetown Road damaged 40 percent of the building that houses the Edwar Group, LLC.

The fire was called in by three men driving by the area just before 10 p.m.

One of the men, Joel Smith, said he and Mike Vann and Mike Crow were driving by when they saw smoke coming out of the building.

"We got here before everything started and called in the fire," Smith said.

Assistant Goldsboro Fire Chief James Farfour said the fire had been burning for "a while" before it was called in.

"When we got here there was heavy smoke coming out of the eaves and roof of the structure," Farfour said. "It looked like the fire had been burning a while. There was not much fire when we got here, but we could tell there had been."

Farfour said the fire had burned so hot that the glass windows in the front of the building had stress cracks in it from the heat.

From the time the call came in to the time the fire was gotten under control was 15 minutes, Farfour said.

"We got on scene quick and got it under control," Farfour said.

Edwar Group, LLC, is directly across the road from a shopping complex that houses BridgePoint Civil, Phone Case World, Hawaiian BBQ & Asian Cuisine, Smoke Shop and Hookah and Subway. The section of Patetown Road where the fire happened that connects North William Street and U.S. 117 was closed off to traffic while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

Farfour said on the scene Sunday night it was too early to say whether or not the fire was being deemed suspicious.

Goldsboro Fire Department Engines 1, 2, 3 and Ladder 1 responded to the scene, as well as the Goldsboro Police Department and Wayne County EMS.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

According to a report filed on the fire with the Goldsboro Fire Department, one of the doors to the business was unlocked, but shut, and there were inconsistent burn patterns from the fire.
