On July 11, at about 11 p.m., the Handy Mart Store at 2495 U.S. 13 North was robbed at gunpoint by three black males.
Deputies of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office responded to a call for assistance from the clerk.
The investigation revealed that the clerk was in the process of closing and securing the store for the evening. The clerk reported and video surveillance confirmed that several suspects approached from the south side of the store and forced him at gunpoint to re-enter the store.
The clerk was held at gunpoint while one of the subjects went behind the counter removing lottery tickets and tobacco products.
Sometime during this incident, the clerk attempted to escape, the subjects began shooting and the clerk was struck by gunfire. Evidence obtained so far has determined that three subjects are involved.
The investigation continues and the sheriff's office is requesting the assistance of the public for any information.

The owner of the Handy Mart, E. J. Pope & Son, is offering a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those individuals responsible for this crime. This $5,000 reward is in addition to any reward/monies offered by Crime Stoppers.
