Jessica Ruiz, a rising sophomore at Wayne School of Engineering, was recently recognized as 2016 Student of the Year by the N.C. Association for Scholastic Activities, or NCASA.
The non-profit organization promotes academic excellence and success of students through scholastic competition. One student is recognized each year for outstanding performance in support of scholastic activities.
Jessica has participated in competitions for four years and competed in six different events this past school year. She has won state and national awards, coached by Jesse Pittard, social studies teacher at WSE.
Among the events she has taken part in the regional N.C. Advocates for Justice Mock Trial Tournament in Greenville. She was also a member of the Quiz Bowl team, competition regionally in various locations around eastern North Carolina.
She placed first in the regional art showcase competition and advanced to the state competition held in Raleigh, and was also a member of the Twelve Team, a knowledge-based academic event that challenges a team of 12 students in answering questions related to 12 topics and subject areas covered by the N.C. Core Curriculum.
She has been a member of the WSE Quill team, a writing competition where teams of four students create written products, given a prompt for each.
She also created a website that was entered in a regional competition of the National History Day competition in Greenville.
