An employee of the Handy Mart located at 2495 U.S. 13 North in Goldsboro was shot three times during an armed robbery at the business Monday after 11 p.m.
Maj. Tom Effler with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the clerk who was shot is Jamie Lee.
"Around the store's closing time dispatch got a call about a person being shot at that business," Effler said. "Deputies were en route and were advised that the victim was an employee."
Effler said Lee was leaving the business after closing down for the day when three unknown males forced him back inside and held him at gunpoint.
"They pushed the victim into the corner of the store and shot him," Effler said. "We believe he saw a chance to escape and made a run for it and that is when they shot him."
Effler said Lee was struck three times from a small caliber handgun.
According to Effler, only lottery tickets and cigars were taken from the business, as the money was already secured since Lee had closed the store for the night.
Detectives Anthony Mullins and Shawn Harris with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office are investigating the armed robbery.
The same Handy Mart location was robbed at gunpoint in early April, when two men entered the business and fired shots at the clerk working at the time. During the April 12 robbery, the clerk working at the time was not struck by the shots fired. One of the suspects has been arrested.
