A 77-year-old Wayne County man fell victim to what appears to be a fraud scheme Thursday afternoon.
The victim of the alleged fraud got a call from his grandson, who supposedly told the victim he was in jail in South Carolina for driving while impaired and needed bail money to get out of jail, according to a police report filed on the incident.
The victim told police he then spoke over the phone with someone who claimed to be his grandson's lawyer, who instructed the victim to call a specific bondsman in Des Moines, Iowa, who would tell him where to send the money, the police report says.
Following this, the victim reportedly sent $1,900 to the specified location through the moneygram system at Walmart at 1002 N. Spence Ave.
The victim later called his grandson, who informed the victim he had been working all night in Raleigh and that he had not called his grandfather, the police report says.
