The grandfather of 29-year-old Steven Brian Perkins has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in a July 4 shooting that left Perkins wounded in the neck.
Silas Henry Perkins, 86, of 957 Old Grantham Road, was arrested July 5 and charged in the shooting, which law enforcement says was caused by an ongoing family feud.
Silas Perkins was placed under a $50,000 bond in the Wayne County Detention Center.
Maj. Tom Effler with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the charges were filed at the recommendation of the district attorney's office.
"We submitted it to the district attorney's office, they reviewed it and they went ahead and charged him," Effler said.
Effler said the sheriff's office suspects a handgun was used in the incident, but that the sheriff's office does not know for sure.
Silas Perkins was reportedly cooperative during the initial investigation into the shooting on Monday.
According to an earlier report, Silas Perkins went with sheriff's deputies to the sheriff's annex on Monday and was interviewed by investigators. No charges were filed Monday. Effler said the younger Perkins' injuries sustained in the shooting were non-life threatening.
