The Kiwanis train at Herman Park will not be running this Saturday and Sunday, due to the forecast of excessive heat, officials said Wednesday.

Harlon Neal, spokesperson for the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro, said the board had made the decision to err on the side of caution in light of predictions that temperatures would climb to more than 100 degrees.

"We don't want to risk the safety of anyone," he told the News-Argus.

Neal, incoming president of the local club, apologized for any inconvenience the cancellation caused. There will be plenty of other opportunities to take advantage of the popular activity, he said.

"The train's operating in its 61st year in Herman Park and we are running the train through the end of September," he said.
