An unexpected water line break during other utility repairs led to the partial closing of North John Street in downtown Goldsboro last week.
City crews closed off a portion of the road Tuesday morning to repair an old, abandoned storm water pipe that had created a 6-inch-deep pot hole, said Jose Martinez, Goldsboro public works director.
"It was getting to a point where it wasn't causing a danger, but we wanted to get it fixed," he said.
When repairs started, a city worker struck nearby a water line, which led to shutting off water service to the Arts Council of Wayne County. The damaged water line was replaced within four hours and service restored to the Arts Council, Martinez said.
"It was an accident," he said.
On Wednesday, city crews repaired the storm water line, originally installed nearly 70 years ago but no longer in service. Following repairs, the pothole was filled with dirt and crushed rock and the area patched. The road re-opened Thursday morning, Martinez said.
The road closing did not block off public access to area businesses or the Arts Council, Martinez said.
