The North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office said Wednesday no foul play was involved after completing an autopsy of human remains that were found in a freezer on Holly Street less than a week ago.
A press release from the Goldsboro Police Department said the person found inside the freezer at 1723-B Holly St. was a Goldsboro resident and is believed to have died from natural causes.
Goldsboro police are still investigating the circumstances around who concealed the body and why the remains were stored in a freezer.
The woman who found the remains reported it to police on Friday, May 27.
She bought the freezer from a neighbor at a yard sale about three weeks prior.
Investigators were called to the scene just after 8:15 p.m. Friday night when the woman called 911.
"I have a serious problem," the unidentified woman said during the 911 call to Wayne County dispatch.
"My neighbor sold me a deep freezer. I just opened it, and there's a body in there I think."
The woman told dispatchers she was "freaking out," and confirmed that her neighbor sold her the freezer.
Maj. Anthony Carmon with the Goldsboro Police Department said investigators spoke with the person that reported finding the remains on the first day of the investigation.
Carmon said the whereabouts of the person who sold the woman the deep freezer are unknown.
The case is being investigated as concealing or failing to notify the death of a person, which is a class I felony.
"We're not sure if the seller is the person that did it, so we are investigating all of it," Carmon said.
The body was intact and not dismembered in any way.
The identity of the person found inside the freezer is being withheld until the family can be notified.
Names of those involved finding or leaving the remains have not been released.
