A man wanted by local authorities for attempted murder since March 19 is now in custody after turning himself in Wednesday afternoon.
Brandon Lee Williams, 29, of 147 Legion Lake, Dudley, was charged with attempted first degree murder, malicious assault in secret and discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle resulting in serious bodily injury. He is being held on a $700,000 secured bond.
Williams turned himself in to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 3 p.m. Wednesday, saying "it's too hot out there," and that "too much heat" was on him.
"He had not been in Wayne County the entire time (since the incident)," said Capt. Richard Lewis with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. "He had been in Wake County for part of the time."
On March 19 at 9:50 p.m., Rhonda Williams agreed to meet her husband -- Williams -- from whom she is currently separated, in the vicinity of Smiths Winding Lane near Pikeville.
When Mrs. Williams arrived at the location, she observed a black Nissan Maxima in the area -- but Williams was not in the vehicle.
As Mrs. Williams began to leave the area, Williams allegedly came from the shoulder of the roadway and began to fire a gun at her, shooting at her approximately four times. One of the rounds that entered the vehicle struck Mrs. Williams in both of her legs.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office was alerted by Wayne Memorial Hospital staff that they were treating Mrs. Williams for gunshot wounds, and that Mrs. Williams had driven to the hospital after being shot.
An examination of Mrs. Williams' vehicle revealed a shattered driver's side window and numerous bullet holes in the driver's side of the car.
Williams was also charged with assault on a female after turning himself in, which was a previously reported incident unrelated to the shooting of Mrs. Williams.
No additional bond was ordered for the assault on a female charge.
