A rising senior at Wayne School of Engineering has been elected District Governor of Carolinas Key Club for the 2016-2017 school year.

Morgan Yelverton had been a lieutenant governor this year.

Key Club International is the largest high school service organization in the world, with more than 5,000 clubs and 260,000 members.

All six Wayne County high schools have Key Clubs, with representatives at the recent Carolinas District Key Club Convention, or DCON, held in Durham. The coverage area, which includes North and South Carolina, includes more than 230 clubs, with more than 12,300 members.

Key Clubs must be sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club and have both a school and Kiwanis adviser. The Sunrise Kiwanis Club sponsors affiliates at Charles B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne high schools and Wayne Country Day school. Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro sponsors clubs at Goldsboro High, Wayne Early/Middle College and Wayne School of Engineering.

Other local students who had served in the District Key Club board for 2015-16 included Cullen Tyndall of Eastern Wayne High School, immediate past governor, and Naudia Gay and Jameson Morris, lieutenant governors, from Wayne Early/Middle College High Schools.

Students from Wayne County chosen to serve with Miss Yelverton as lieutenant governors for the coming year include Bailey Stamper of Charles B. Aycock, James Liao of Eastern Wayne and Ashley DosSantos of WEMCH.

Miss Yelverton, along with her best friend, Leah Weaver, approached the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro two years ago to sponsor a new Key Club at WSE. Miss Yelverton was charter president during the 2014-15 school year, with Miss Weaver serving in that capacity this year.

Miss Yelverton was elected Lt. Governor this year over Division 14 Key Clubs, which include clubs in Wayne and Johnston counties. During the recent convention, she received the Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lt. Governor Award.

Students and clubs also compete for numerous awards that are presented at the convention. Some represent the work done at the local level "to build their homes, schools, and communities" throughout the Key Club year, and others are group or individual competitions held at DCON.

Local award winners this year included Mara Rozzi, WSE, first place oratorical; WEMCHS, receiving awards for the major emphasis program, outstanding club achievement, and donations over $200 to the Eliminate Project and UNICEF; Eastern Wayne, for donations over $200 to the Eliminate Project and Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw; and Charles B. Aycock, for making a donation over $700 to UNICEF/Eliminate Project.
