The community is invited to Herman Park at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, for the unveiling of the Leadership Wayne Class of 2015-2016 project.
Its "Story Walk" project was presented by the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro, Partnership for Children of Wayne County and the Goldsboro Parks and Recreation Department.
The class has created 18 reading stations, installed a book exchange or "Little Free Library" and given the landscape a facelift by installing railroad ties around flower beds throughout Herman Park.
The reading stations will allow for children to read a book as they walk through the park.
The group went a step further by installing a book exchange in the park.
The Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro will use the book exchange to promote childhood literacy by rewarding children who read three books with a free train ride.
Leadership Wayne is a program of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and is designed to create a corps of leaders dedicated to the betterment of the community through service.
The class has done an exceptional job of completing this project that will bring value to the park for years to come, all while engaging children physically and educationally, Chamber officials said.
More than 480 graduates have completed the Leadership Wayne program in the last 32 years.
The class project is one major component of the program that gives participants the opportunity to give back to the community through service and volunteerism.
The projects must provide hands-on work for all class members, must benefit Wayne County citizens and it must be completed within a three-to-four-month time period.
Anyone interested in participating in the program should contact Janet Brock at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.
