PIKEVILLE -- The Pikeville Town Hall will be moving to a new temporary facility next month after undisclosed "environmental issues" caused the previous location to become unuseable. This will mark the second relocation for Town Hall after it moved to its current location in 2010.
Movement is a familiar theme for Town Hall; the original downtown building had to be vacated after structural problems made it impossible to use. The roof was of particular concern.
"It rained more inside the building than it did outside." said Operations Superintendent Perry Jones.
These problems prompted the relocation of town hall to the trailer where it currently resides. Billed as a "temporary measure," the trailer has now been the seat of Pikeville government for nearly six years.
The move to a new trailer, located directly across from the current one, comes as a result of "environmental issues" with the first trailer, issues which Town Administrator Michael Hunt declined to explain further.
Deputy Town Clerk Akina Corder said the town hopes to be moved into the new trailer by next month. The new building, which is about 12 feet shorter than the original, will cost the town around $820 a month to rent.
Hunt said that the town hopes to be moved back into a permanent building within 8-10 months, a process which would cost around $1.5 million. He said that the town is looking into securing a loan to provide for that cost.
After the move, Hunt said that the town is entertaining a few options for the old trailer; it could be used for storage or for use by members of the community.
