Jones, Bland will square off for superior court judge

Incumbent Arnold Jones swept to an easy first place in the primary for superior court judge in Wayne County on Tuesday, taking 43 percent of the total votes cast. Attorney Will Bland came in second with 31 percent and former judge Jerry Braswell nearly 25 percent. The results set up a November contest between Jones and Bland.

In the race for the District 3 seat on the county Board of Commissioners, incumbent John Bell easily defeated Constance Coram with 68 percent of the votes cast. Coram received 31 percent. Bell faces no opposition in the fall.

In the race for the District 3 seat on the county Board of Elections, incumbent Pat Burden took 49 percent of the vote and newcomer Trebor Jackson 21 percent, creating a race in November between the two.

In the Republican presidential primary, Wayne voters gave Donald Trump a narrow margin of victory over Ted Cruz, with Trump taking 42.5 percent and Cruz 42.2. In the Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton received 62 percent of the votes cast in Wayne, with Bernie Sanders coming in a distant second with 29 percent.
