On Wednesday, Greenwood Middle students successfully put their reading skills to the test by winning the Wayne County Public Schools' 30th annual Battle of the Books competition. The competition took place at the Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center with approximately 90 students from 10 middle schools competing.
Sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association, Battle of the Books is a quiz bowl type competition, specifically designed for students, grades 6 through 8. Students at participating schools read books from a list established by the state Battle of the Books committee, and then compete to test their knowledge of the books. This year's book list consisted of 27 titles.
The Greenwood team will now move on to the regional competition, to be held April 8 at Croatan High School in Newport.
The Greenwood Middle 2015-2016 team consists of Micah Edwards, Camille Hughes, Anya Crumpler, Makayla Johnson, Lucy Lunsford, Eboni Brown, Jazmin Jones, and Donna Robles. The team was coached by Ingrid Brown, Kimberly Jordan, and Gina Rikard.
The Battle of the Books program is coordinated by the Media Center program at participating schools. Organizers state that Battle of the Books competition is a great way to motivate students to read and be exposed to quality literature.
Norwayne Middle took second place. Their team consists of Makenzy Schinsky, Karley Madden, Emma Lutz, Noah Overton, Micky Lenzi, and Katlyn Parrish. The team is coached by Rhonda Nichols, Sara Ruhl, and Marah Radford.
In addition to Norwayne Middle and Greenwood Middle, other schools that participated in the competition include: Brogden Middle, Dillard Middle, Eastern Wayne Middle, Grantham Middle, Mount Olive Middle, Rosewood Middle, Spring Creek Middle, and Wayne School of Engineering.
