Goldsboro was recently named as a stop on a statewide film tour named "Coal Ash Stories."
A screening of four films related to coal ash in North Carolina will be shown in a total of six cities across North Carolina.
The Goldsboro screening will be Thursday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. at the St. Mark Church of Christ at 700 W. Ash St., and will be hosted by NC WARN and the Down East Coal Ash Coalition.
The four films being shown are named "Coal Ash Chronicles," "Little Blue," "Coal Ash and North Carolina: A Silent Disaster" and "At What Cost?"
Each screening session in each of the six cities will be facilitated by Rhiannon Fionn, a journalist and producer of "Coal Ash Chronicles."
Following the film screening, attendees will have the chance to speak with neighbors and speakers about coal ash and its effects on a community. This is also a chance for attendees to submit comments that will be given to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality regarding pending coal ash basin closures across the state.
This statewide film screening tour is designed to coincide with public hearings beginning at the state level on March 1 concerning each of Duke Energy's 14 coal ash basin sites in the state.
The public hearings are regarding the drafting of a prioritization schedule for the closure of each site. The final rankings that are determined by these public hearings will determine both the clean-up process and closure deadlines.
Other screening locations of the films across the state are as follows:
* Shelby -- Wednesday, Feb. 24, 6:30 p.m., Cleveland County Memorial Library, 104 Howie Drive
*Salisbury -- Tuesday, March 1, 7 p.m., Catawba College Center for the Environment, 2300 W. Innes St.
