MOUNT OLIVE -- The 10th annual membership and awards banquet for the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Olive Jaycees will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, in the Hennessee Room of the Holmes and Lois Murphy Regional Center on the University of Mount Olive campus.

Tickets are $25 in advance from the Chamber or $30 at the door.

Highlights of the evening include the presentation of seven awards as presented by the Jaycees including: Distinguished Service Award, Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Public Servant, Outstanding Farmer, Outstanding Senior Citizen, Outstanding Teenager and Boss of the Year.

Nomination forms are available at the Chamber office, 123 N. Center St.

Feb. 25 is the deadline to submit nominations.

In addition to the Jaycee awards, the Chamber will present the Ruff Huggins Lifetime Community Service Award and the Lillian B. Langley Award as well as share an overview of Chamber accomplishments for 2015.

The DSA is the top award given for community service.

The Outstanding Educator Award recognizes an exceptional educator who works in the area. The person must be a teacher in grades kindergarten through 12th grade in Wayne and Duplin counties to be eligible for the award.

The Outstanding Public Servant Award is typically given to a person that works in fire and/or rescue, police officer or in the sector of public safety.

The Outstanding Farmer Award is awarded each year to a farmer knowledgeable in many aspects of the field.

The Distinguished Service Award, Outstanding Educator Award, Outstanding Public Servant Award and Outstanding Farmer Award are only given to people ages 21 to 40.

The Outstanding Senior Citizen Award is open to someone 60 years old and above and contributes time and service to the community.

The Outstanding Teenager Award is awarded to a high school senior with a grade point average of 3.0 and higher.

The Boss of the Year Award is given to someone's employer and has given meritorious service to the community and to those in which they lead.

The Ruff Huggins Lifetime Community Service Award was created nearly eight years ago in honor of former Mount Olive Mayor Ruff Huggins.

The award is so prestigious that there were some years in which it was not awarded because of the lack of deserving candidates, Chamber officials said.

The Lillian B. Langley Award, named after a former chairman of the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce, will be given to a Chamber board member for outstanding service in the community, exceptional work on the board and being an advocate for the community, Chamber officials said.
