Officers with the Goldsboro Police Department responding to a report of shots fired early this morning found themselves involved in a simultaneous pursuit of two vehicles, according to a press release.

Police arrested two men and recovered a stolen AR-15 assault rifle with a laser attachment as a result.

The shots were reported in the area of Dupont Circle in the West Haven community around midnight, the report said. Officers arrived in time to see two vehicles fleeing the area and gave chase.

The first vehicle, a 2002 Saturn, headed north on U.S. Highway 70 and led officers into Peacock Park where the driver crashed into a fence, the press release said. The driver and a passenger both fled on foot.

Police officers were able to catch up with the passenger, Desmond Rayquan Jones, 20, of LaGrange, and place him under arrest. The driver got away.

Inside the Saturn officer located a Stag Arms AR-15 with green laser on the bottom. The value of the weapon and laser are listed at $1,800.

The second vehicle fleeing Dupont Circle traveled east on U.S. Highway 70 and then turned on to N.C. 111 South and headed toward Dollard Town Road. At St. John Church Road, the driver jumped out and ran.

Officers quickly caught up to and arrested the driver, later identified as Fiante Semaj Amerson, 25, of 1110 Atlantic Ave.

Jones is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen firearm, resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer, providing fictitious information and discharging a firearm within city limits. He also had an outstanding warrant from Greene County on a probation violation. His bond is set at $120,000 secured.

Amerson is charged with fleeing to elude arrest, no operator's license, failing to stop at a red light, careless and reckless driving, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His bond is set at $100,000 secured.

Both men are due to appear today in Wayne County District Court.
