George Jeffreys

George Jeffreys, who led one of the oldest Anheuser-Busch distributorships in the nation, died Wednesday.

He was 90.

Jeffreys became president of Jeffreys Beer and Wine in 1968. The business, now known as R.A. Jeffreys Distributing Co., was established in 1923, and is the oldest Anheuser-Busch distributor in North Carolina, and is among the oldest family-owned distributorships in the nation.

Jeffreys was an entrepreneur but also contributed to many community causes and organizations. The Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts of American honored him with its Distinguished Service Award in 2012.

A native of Goldsboro, he was the oldest of four children of Robert Alexander and Thelma Collins Jeffreys.

He attended Oak Ridge Military Academy and served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II.

He and his wife of 51 years, Lucy, had three children and seven grandchildren.

Jeffreys was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
