The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal shooting outside a residence in Dudley, Saturday morning.

Investigators are working to determine whether the gun shot was self-inflicted.

"Right now we are working it as a death investigation," Maj. Tom Effler said.

According to a press release, Arnette Marshburn, 43, of Andrews Circle in Mount Olive, died from a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators said she was living part-time at the residence with her boyfriend, whose name has not yet been released. Investigators said the boyfriend is not being treated as a suspect at this time.

At 9:11 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office received a report of a person shot at 3511 U.S. 117 Alt., Effler said.

"When we got here, we found a black female lying beside the car," he said.

Wayne County EMS responded and transported Ms. Marshburn to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Her body will be sent to the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh, Effler said.

"The autopsy is going to be (Sunday), or we hope it is going to be (Sunday), and we have a couple other things we are going to do (Sunday) before we do anything else," Effler said.

The investigation is ongoing.
