The first-ever Arts Council of Wayne County Plein Air Paint Out juried art event concluded Saturday with three entries taking home cash prizes.
The outdoor painting event held in Herman Park and in downtown Goldsboro hosted by the Arts Council saw a total of five entries.
Taking first place and a $300 prize was "Christmas time," an oil painting by Galina Stockstill.
In second place, "Jingle in the Park," an acrylic painting by Jo Turner, captured the Christmas lights and revelry at the Goldsboro Department of Parks and Recreation annual holiday event by the same name held Friday and Saturday night in Herman Park.
And third place went to an untitled water color painting by Gail Askins.
The second and third place entries took home $200 and $100, respectively.
Turner said she chose to paint in Herman Park rather than downtown because she new a lot of people would be there enjoying live music and the festivities put on by the city Parks and Recreation Department.
"I liked that there was a lot happening there," she said.
Turner spends a lot of time looking at and painting the stars and said the Christmas lights presented a similar challenge. She said she first started to create art six or seven years ago and began with pencil drawings.
In recent years, however, Turner believes her art has found a home in acrylics.
"I've pretty much settled with acrylic (painting,)" she said. "But I still create other works," she said.
Turner said the best advice she has for aspiring painters is to first learn to draw.
"The better you get at drawing, the better you will get at painting," Turner said.
Turner's work -- and that of the rest of the Plein Air Paint Out entries -- will be on display in the Arts Council of Wayne County Art Market through the rest of the month.
A second Plein Air Paint Out event is slated for the spring.
