State Sen. Don Davis of Snow Hill has announced he will seek re-election to the District 5 state Senate seat that includes portions of Wayne, Pitt, Lenoir and Greene counties.

Davis, 44, a Democrat, is the former mayor of Snow Hill.

If elected to a fourth term, he would be the third-ranking Democrat in the chamber.

The candidate filing period for the 2016 primary and general election begins at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and ends at noon on Monday, Dec. 21.

A native of Snow Hill, Davis said he also spent a lot of time growing up in Goldsboro, his father's hometown.

Davis received his undergraduate degree from the Air Force Academy. He has master's degrees in administration from Central Michigan University and in sociology from East Carolina University. He also has a Ph.D. in education from ECU.

"I'm totally devoted to serving the residents of eastern North Carolina, and plan to seek another term in the state Senate," Davis said. "With the challenges we are facing in Raleigh, there is still much work to accomplish."

Legislators will return to Raleigh in April for the short session that primarily will deal with fine-tuning the budget. But there will be a window of opportunity to work on public policy as well, Davis said.

"I have a couple of bills out that I more than likely will be working on trying to get them passed," he said. "The way it works is any bill that was introduced in the session this year you have until the end of the short session to get it passed, or it has to be re-filed."

Davis serves on the Appropriations/Base Budget, Appropriations on Education/Higher Education, Health Care, State and Local Government and Development committees. He also serves on the powerful Joint Legislative Government Operations and Program Evaluation Oversight committees.

Davis was named Legislator of the Year by the state Association of Teacher Assistants.
