The Rev. Dr. William Barber received the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Award on behalf of the Moral Movement during ceremonies held recently in New York City.
The award is presented to those whose achievements have demonstrated a commitment to the four principles Roosevelt proclaimed in a historic speech to Congress in January 1941 as essential to democracy: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.
Barber was one of five laureates receiving the award, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
He is the pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church on North William Street in Goldsboro.
The Moral Movement is a coalition of almost 200 organizations in the state that practiced civil disobedience at the North Carolina General Assembly as a way to bring attention to legislation the organizers believed to be contrary to those principles.
