Those heading out to the annual Taste of Wayne County Saturday will have to put their taste buds on hold.
Because of rain coming in Saturday, the event has been rescheduled to Sunday from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
"We have been communicating with some people on base who have access to radar and the weather, and they assured us it would be raining Saturday," community engagement manager Catherine Lechot said. "As of Wednesday at 5 p.m., it was looking like only a 30 percent chance of rain, but later in the evening, that jumped up to 90 percent. Now, the hourly forecast is 80 percent or higher chance of rain through the wee hours of Saturday morning to about 5 p.m."
Mrs. Lechot said a lot of the vendors use electricity, and electricity and water don't mix. So the event was put off until Sunday for safety.
Tickets that have already been sold are nonrefundable, Mrs. Lechot said.
"The Taste is a fundraiser for United Way," she said. "If those who have already purchased tickets can't make it Sunday, we hope they will look at it as a donation to United Way."
Mrs. Lechot said a couple of restaurants had to drop out of the event.
"There's not a perfect time for everybody," she said. "A few of the restaurants can't come. When you have a large event like this, you can't reschedule it for the next weekend because the food prepared by the restaurants would not keep."
Mrs. Lechot said the local restaurants have been understanding and very supportive of United Way's decision to change the Taste date.
But there will still be plenty of restaurants offering visitors a taste of their dishes. And there will be plenty of food for visitors to come and sample, Mrs. Lechot said.
"And the city has been very helpful and supportive of us moving the date and will close off the streets Sunday instead, just at a later time," she said.
Tickets for the Taste are $15, with children 6 and younger free, available at the event Sunday.
