A Goldsboro man jailed on earlier charges now faces six felony counts of forgery after an investigation into checks stolen from an Air Force officer transitioning from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to a base in Hawaii.

According to a press release issued by the Goldsboro Police Department Wednesday, Lt. Col. James Ladd reported the checks stolen Sept. 9, after he discovered them missing. Since then, the checks, signed by neither Ladd nor his wife, have been cashed in amounts totaling $2,850.

Throughout the course of the investigation, a suspect emerged as having worked for the moving company hired to move the Ladd family's household goods from North Carolina to Hawaii.

Sherwood Lavon Core, 48, is charged with six counts of felony forgery of an instrument, uttering a forged instrument, possession of a counterfeit instrument, forgery of an endorsement, and possession of a counterfeit instrument.

Core, already jailed on related charges, saw his bail increased to a $50,000 secured bond and is scheduled for a first appearance in Wayne County District Court today.
