PIKEVILLE -- A Faison man is facing four felony drug charges following a late Friday night chase after he drove through a police checkpoint in the area of the 200 block of Big Daddy's Road.
After a brief chase, Fitzgerald Devon Brown, 25, of 126 Daniel Hill Lane of Faison, was captured at gunpoint and taken into custody.
Neither Brown nor the officers involved were injured during the pursuit.
Officers said there was a "very strong odor" of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
A search of the vehicle found numerous illegal items including approximately 280 grams of marijuana (10 ounces), a set of digital scales, drug paraphernalia and an open container of alcohol.
Brown was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver, possession of marijuana, maintain a vehicle and flee to elude, all felonies.
He also was charged with driving while license revoked and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
Brown was booked at the Wayne County Detention Center under a $7,000 secured bond.
Cash totaling $682 was seized as a result of the drug charges and the vehicle seized under the state DWI seizure law.
The multi-agency traffic enforcement checkpoint was conducted by the Pikeville Police Department in an effort to reduce collisions as well as ensure compliance of motor vehicle laws, police said.
The checkpoint was a joint effort between the Pikeville and Fremont police departments as part of the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Programs "Booze It & Lose It" Campaign."
Other charges filed as a direct result of the checkpoint were driving while license revoked, no operator's license, registration violations, seat belt violations, child restraint violations and driving while impaired.
