Southern Bank will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Friday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. to kick off the construction of a new banking facility at 2501 E. Ash St.

The groundbreaking will be held at the corner of Ash Street and Spence Avenue for the more-than-$1-million project.

The new office will be the second Southern Bank office location in Goldsboro. The existing branch, located at 2301 Wayne Memorial Drive, will remain open.

The new branch office at 7,400 square feet will be among the larger ones in the bank's network.

The new branch will be a full-service banking facility with a two-lane drive-through on the back side of the building and ATM service, night deposit drop box service and local lending offices.

In addition to the vault and teller area, it will have four downstairs offices along with five or six offices and a boardroom upstairs.

"Southern Bank is rated as a 5-Star Bank by Bauer Financial and there are over 60 locations serving North Carolina and Virginia, including seven locations in Wayne County with this new office," said Greg Shackelford, senior vice president and regional executive for Southern Bank. "Southern Bank employs over 600 employees, with over 100 positions based in Wayne County."

Bank officials announced the project on March 4 before a packed room of bank and local officials during a business breakfast meeting at Wilber's Barbecue.

The branch on Wayne Memorial Drive opened after Heritage Bank was merged with Southern Bank in July 2013.

The bank serves customers from Sampson County in the southwest to Tidewater Virginia and to the Outer Banks.

When the bank was founded in 1901 as the Bank of Mount Olive it had $10,000 in assets and 17 investors.

Today it has assets approaching $2.3 billion with 67 offices serving North Carolina and Virginia and more than 600 employees, 100 of which are in Wayne County.

Of the 67 branches, 35 are located in communities of 5,000 or fewer people.

With its corporate headquarters located in Mount Olive, Southern Bank and Trust Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southern BancShares (N.C.) Inc.
