Wayne County Public Schools is gearing up for another school year, releasing its open house and orientation events this week.
The first day of classes for students will be Aug. 24.
Open house is an opportunity to meet teachers, pick up supply lists and learn daily schedules for classes. For those new to the district, it can also be a chance to become familiar with the school.
While an abbreviated session, parents can utilize the time to ask individual questions about their own child's needs and hear teacher expectations for the students.
Middle and high schools will hold open house events on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m.
The next evening, on Thursday from 5-7 p.m., elementary schools will host families, with the exception of Edgewood Community Developmental School, which will schedule appointments for parents to meet between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Orientation events are also planned at area schools.
Dillard Middle will hold a fifth-grade open house on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. That same day, Eastern Wayne High will hold orientation for ninth-graders and new students from 1 to 3 p.m.
Officials are also reminding the public that with a new school year comes a resurgence of buses on the road. Be mindful of children at bus stops and slowdowns as bus drivers adapt and make frequent stops.
There will also be some changes ushered in this fall.
During the first week of school, the transportation department will distribute fliers with important information about new hand signals drivers will begin using. The effort is part of a new state initiative to increase safety for students crossing the street.
Information about the changes, including a video link, will also be posted on the district website, www.waynecountyschools. org.
