Traffic on North Spence Avenue was blocked for more than an hour Thursday between Mall Road and Royall Avenue after a motorcyclist died near the entrance of the Oak Brook apartment complex.
According to a Goldsboro Police Department accident report, the victim was ejected after striking a curb.
Damian James Featherman, 24, 1601 Cuyler Best Road, was traveling north on North Spence Avenue at 7:45 p.m. when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed, according to the report.
Witnesses said Featherman was traveling at a high rate of speed when his front tire hit the curb. He was thrown from the vehicle and struck a brick flower bed outside the entrance to Oak Brook Apartments at 700 N. Spence Ave.
"It does not look like there was any suspicion of impairment," Maj. Michael West said.
West said Featherman did not have a motorcycle endorsement, which might indicate a lack of riding experience, but whether that played a role in the crash is still unclear.
Featherman's speed at the time of the wreck, however, did contribute to his losing control, West said.
The Goldsboro Fire Department and Wayne County EMS 51 responded, but Featherman succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
