Three recent high school graduates have been presented $750 scholarships to pursue higher education in the fall.
Brittany Acree, director of marketing and public relations, said the credit union introduced a scholarship contest as part of its mission to advance financial literacy in the community.
"In an effort to give back to our high schools, both monetarily to a deserving student and educationally with our financial literacy program, we established the 'Do More' scholarship contest," she said.
An invitation to participate was extended to all public county high schools. Three accepted -- Wayne School of Engineering, Goldsboro and Southern Wayne high schools.
Representatives from N.C. Community Credit Union then hosted a seminar titled "Finances for the Real World" for the senior class at each school. The seminar touched on a variety of pertinent topics for that age group, including basic budgeting, reading and understanding a pay stub, saving for the future, the importance of good credit and smart car buying.
All students attending the seminar were then eligible to apply for the $750 scholarship, with one student at each participating school to be awarded the scholarship.
The three recipients were presented the award during a recent "Do More" scholarship reception.
Zachary Darden, Wayne School of Engineering, is the son of Michelle and Chuck Darden. He plans to attend East Carolina University and study mechanical engineering.
Jasmine McIntyre recently graduated from Goldsboro High School and plans to attend A&T State University, to work toward a career as a data architect. Her parents are James and Robin McIntyre.
Kaila Nasser graduated from Southern Wayne High School. The daughter of Kim and Ron Nasser plans to attend Appalachian State University and pursue a career as a physical therapist.
