Joe Scott to run for Mount Olive town board spot

MOUNT OLIVE -- District 4 town Commissioner Joe Scott announced Monday that he will seek re-election.

Filing for office begins Monday, July 6, at 8 a.m. and continues through Friday, July 17, at noon.

The election is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

All of the board seats are up for election -- Mayor Ray McDonald Sr.; At-large Commissioner Ray Thompson; District 1, Kenny Talton; and District 2, Jerry Armstrong.

The District 3 seat has been vacant since February following the death of George Fulghum. Former board member Tom Preston as announced he will run for that seat.

All of the terms are for two years.

"I am planning to run again for District 4," Scott said. "I hope my district will support me this November. I have worked hard to improve our Police Department, Fire Department and airport, which I am commissioner over these departments.

"With the help of our citizens, we have demolished some of the old houses and have made improvements in water and sewage. There is much more to be done and we are in the middle of expansions with water and sewage, which I am involved with."

Scott is the son of the late Tip and Velma Scott, and is married to Rebecca Potter Scott. They have three sons and five grandchildren and one on the way.

Scott retired after six years from Acme United Corporation as a purchasing and logistics manager for its health care division. He was the manager for Grain Systems, Inc. (GSI), North Carolina division, for 10 years and was in sales and part owner in Scott and Jones, Inc. for 20 years.

He has served on several boards including school advisory boards for B.F. Grady and Southern Wayne High School. He served two terms as president of the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce. He has been president of the Southern Wayne Boosters Club and the Mount Olive Exchange Club.

He has been a Scoutmaster and has a Wood Badge in Boy Scouts.

Scott and his family attend The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where is a former bishop, Young Men's president and elder. He is currently serving in several capacities.

Scott also serves on the board of the Wayne County Development Alliance for Mount Olive and Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce board.

He is adviser to Parks and Recreation, where he works with the Friends of the Parks.

"All these areas make a great impact on Mount Olive," Scott said. "It takes long hours of commitment and hard work, which my wife and family give me much support. I thank them for their commitment, too."
