Relay for Life organizers are still tallying how much was raised from this year's event, held May 15-16 at the fairgrounds.
It may be awhile before they have a total, said Brenda Robinson, Wayne County Relay for Life co-chairman.
"They have until June 1 for every team total, but the Relay season doesn't end until Aug. 31," she said.
Donations are still trickling in, she said after a sparsely attended team meeting Thursday evening.
Some said the crowd was down this year, perhaps in part to other events going on simultaneously around the county -- including Wayne Community College's curriculum graduation and the Wings Over Wayne Air Show.
But Mrs. Robinson said security at the fairgrounds estimated the Relay attendance at around 10,000 this year.
Three winning booths were picked for having the best theme or decoration, earning their pick of campsite location next year.
In first place was TA Loving, a Star Wars-themed booth featuring such popular characters as Chewbacca, Yoda and Princess Leia.
Second place went to the clown-themed Goldsboro Wellness Center "Health Nutz."
Rays of Hope, which chose a hay and horse-themed booth, won third place.
An awards ceremony, with further announcements about the amount raised this year, is being planned for June 25, Mrs. Robinson said, in the meantime expressing appreciation for those affiliated with this year's event.
"On behalf of the Wayne County Relay For Life I'd like to thank the leadership team, team captains, team members, sponsors, survivors, caregivers , participants and this community who came together to make this Relay event successful," she said. "Without them cancer wins. With their support we get one step closer to finishing the fight. We are saving lives, not just in Wayne County but around the world."
