A man and a woman charged by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office Friday in connection with a pair of motor vehicle break-ins reported May 11 might also be responsible for break-ins in the city.
Since March, dozens of motor vehicle break-ins have been reported, often coming in clusters occurring in the same neighborhoods over the same time period.
Maj. Toney Carmon said he could not yet confirm whether the suspects in custody with the sheriff's office were indeed connected to some of the break-ins his Goldsboro detectives are investigating.
"Right now we cannot say if they are or if they are not," Carmon said. "We are still looking into it."
According to a press release, stolen credit cards and items purchased with those cards helped investigators link the two suspects to the crimes.
Corey Maurice Coley, 44, and Jacqueline Renee Washington, 46, are charged with two counts of felony motor vehicle break-in, three counts of felony larceny of financial cards, two counts of possession of stolen goods and a single count of felony larceny.
Coley also faces nine counts each of felony obtaining property by false pretense and felony identity fraud.
According to the release, a victim reported his vehicle broken into May 11 and told deputies he learned his credit cards were being used. Investigators tracked the credit cards back to businesses along U.S. Highway 70 East leading into Lenoir County. Descriptions of the suspect vehicle, and of the suspects themselves, were obtained and eventually a traffic stop conducted.
Coley and Ms. Washington were taken into custody. The car the couple was driving and the room the two were staying in at the Carolina Motel in Goldsboro both contained stolen property linked to other break-ins, the report said.
The suspects also had outstanding warrants in Pitt and in Wayne County. Coley was placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $218,000 secured bond. Ms. Washington's bond was set at $8,0000.
Coley is scheduled for a first appearance in Wayne County District Court later today. Ms. Washington will appear May 26.
