Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni & Friends Inc. will celebrate 60 years of education and service during Memorial Day weekend, May 21-24. Alumni, especially those graduating in years ending in 0 and 5, will be celebrating class reunions with lunches, banquets, dances and picnics across the city.
The national organization, which has chapters in Atlanta, Goldsboro, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., has traditionally attracted more than 10,000 former students from Dillard and Goldsboro high schools to participate in the events.
The Scholarship and Awards Program to be held in the auditorium of Goldsboro High School on Thursday will kick off the weekend activities.
Graduating seniors from Wayne County and other areas where chapters exist will be awarded more than $35,000 in scholarships. Annual membership tickets can be purchased during the event, and they can be used for admission to the reception following the Scholarship and Awards Program, the alumni dance and picnic on Saturday.
The Alumni Dance will be held on Friday night in the H.V. Brown Hall. Admission is included with the membership ticket and the other dates and times for purchase prior to May 21 are posted at the Alumni Headquarters Building on Poplar Street.
Saturday's activities will begin at 10 a.m. with a parade. The route had to be changed due to construction in downtown Goldsboro. The parade will begin on Public Drive near Dillard Middle School, proceeding to South Slocumb Street, to East Elm Street, to Poplar Street, to Olivia Lane, to South Slocumb Street and back to Public Street. Parade entry forms can be picked up at the Headquarters Building on Poplar Street. A picnic will follow at noon on the campus of the Alumni Headquarters.
The "New School Dance" will be held on Saturday night at the H.V. Brown Hall. Tickets for this event are $20 and can be purchased prior to the event at Christ Made A Way Barber Shop, Headquarters Barber Shop and Primer Cuts.
Sunday, May 24, will mark the 13th anniversary of the Sunday Worship Service. Minister Andre Elliot, a former scholarship recipient, will deliver the message at 11 a.m. in the H.V. Brown Hall. The campus will be open to all classes for their picnics after the service.
