Continental Society holds 31st annual meeting in Goldsboro

The 31st annual meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Region of Continental Societies Inc. was held recently in Goldsboro.
The Goldsboro Love Connection Committee -- Comatha B. Johnson, chair, Miranda Haskins, Rochelle Hobbs, Dionne Johnson and Belinda Royall, all members of the Goldsboro Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc. -- served as co-host for the event.
The theme was Sisters with Helping Hands and Loving Hearts.
The purpose of the organization is to provide services to children and youth who are underserved or may be considered disadvantaged.
The Friday evening activity included a workshop on sisterhood conducted by Val Day.
On Saturday morning the members convened in the historic Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni Building and toured the local chapter's Continental Suite.
The conference opened with a prayer breakfast with Dr. J. Jerome Newton of Mount Olive as the keynote speaker
The Goldsboro chapter was praised for its devotion and dedication to helping children and youth in Wayne County and surrounding communities over the past 54 years.
The Goldsboro Love Connection presented a plague to Thomas Washington, owner of Washington Shoe, for his many years of support for the organization.
Destiny Dawson and Joseph Vaughn officiated at the awards luncheon. The current Continental Queen and King, Lauren Cain and Jordan Barrett, also greeted guests.
The recipient of the Regional Underwearness Drive was the WAGES Head Start program with Patricia Beier, director of Children and Family Services, receiving more than 1,700 items for the Head Start children.
The Goldsboro chapter was the winner of the Gertrude B. Logan and Edna B. Prunty Outstanding Camp Award.
Jaedan Smith, sponsored by the Goldsboro chapter, was winner of the Mabs Kemp Essay Contest for the Elementary School Division.
The Comatha B. Johnson Outstanding Member-Leadership Award was presented to Donna Lee of the Roanoke, Va. chapter.
Other local winners included Dionne Johnson, the Continental Extra Effort Award and Comatha B. Johnson, The Shining Star Award.
