The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating an early morning break-in at the Wayne County Library on Ash Street.
Between the time employees left the building Tuesday and returned to work Wednesday, someone broke into the facility and stole a cash register.
The register itself -- valued at $400 -- is worth more than the amount of money it contained, $275, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The break-in took place after 9 p.m. Tuesday and was reported at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, the police report said.
According to the report, unknown suspects broke a north side window with a rock to gain entry.
Once inside, the suspect removed the register from the front desk area and fled in an unknown direction, the report said.
Library Executive Director Donna Phillips said the staff was notified of the break-in at 3 a.m.
"We were a little delayed in opening the next morning because we had to sweep up the shards of glass," she said.
No further damage was caused inside the library and, other than the late opening Wednesday, operations were not interrupted, she said.
The damage to the window is estimated on the report at $350.
Capt. Dwayne Dean of the Goldsboro Police Department said via email that the case had been assigned to an investigator.
"If we are able to obtain any video/stills from the library and we need help in getting the person identified we certainly will release what we have to elicit the public's help in identifying the suspect(s)," Dean said.
"There is nothing new to release at this time regarding that case ... ."
