PIKEVILLE -- Mayor Glenn Hartman erroneously appointed Commissioner Jay Hare as the mayor pro tempore Monday evening during a board meeting.
The mayor, under state law, is not authorized to appoint the mayor pro tem, rather, the council must vote on the who will serve in the position.
The town's attorney, Justin Minshew, said he pointed out the mistake to the council and mayor and it was agreed that the vote should take place at the next scheduled meeting.
"I found out after the meeting that we needed to do it in a different way from our attorney," said Hartman.
"It will be on the agenda for next month. He will be voted on by the board."
The mayor pro tem position was vacated when former commissioner Todd Anderson resigned his position on the board shortly after Hare was appointed to fill the seat left vacant when Al Greene died.
