The Wilson Police Department this morning confirmed the identity of a Charles B. Aycock High School student shot Wednesday in Wilson.
Wayne County Public Schools Director of Communications Ken Derksen verified the student's name.
Shy'khym Allen, 16, is an 11th grade student at Aycock, Derksen said via email.
According to a Wilson Police Department press release, the shooting took place Wednesday between 8 and 8:05 p.m. Officers responded to the scene and found Allen lying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound.
"He was found in the street directly in front of 640 Cemetery St.," Capt. Tad Shelton said.
Allen was first taken to Wilson Medical Center and later transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, the press release said.
Shelton said he could neither confirm nor deny reports circulating on social media that the bullet left Allen paralyzed from the neck down.
Officials at Vidant said Allen's name did not appear among the patients listed in their registry.
No suspects have been identified in the shooting, but two men wearing hooded sweatshirts were seen leaving the area on foot, the press release said. Detectives and forensics are following up on leads at this time, the release said.
The Wilson Police Department asks that anyone with information regarding the shooting call Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255, or contact the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323. Crime Stoppers tips can remain anonymous and those leading to a felony arrest are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
Derksen said there are staff in place at C.B. Aycock and that as of this morning, no additional counselors had been sent to the school.
"We have an excellent counseling staff at the school," Derksen said.
"We will continue to monitor and if we need to we will send more (counselors)."
