Two men are in jail today on drug and assault charges after police say they beat a man at Beestown Grocery, 905 S. Slocumb St., Saturday.
The assault took place at 7:25 p.m. according to a Goldsboro police report.
Jonathan O'neal, 25, 608 S. Best St., and Vonterio Elroy Best, 23, of Wilson, are both charged with assault inflicting serious injury.
O'neal is also charged with reckless driving and resisting arrest, and Best faces charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of mushrooms.
O'neal and Best were given secured bonds of $11,000 and $2,500, respectively, and placed in the Wayne County Jail.
The victim, Antonio Demetrius Hardy, 34, told police he had just paid for a pack of cigarettes when he was struck in the back of the head. When police arrived on scene, he was found bleeding from a laceration above the left eye.
According to the police report, the suspects used a weapon listed as "personal tools" to assault Hardy.
The police department declined phone calls but answered questions via email, saying O'neal and Best "were charged for hitting the victim with their hands/fists."
Police reviewed security footage from inside the store by which they identified O'neal and Best as the suspects, the report said.
O'neal and Best were located less than a block away in the 600 block of Wilmington Avenue and were taken into custody.
Both men are due to appear in Wayne County District Court later today.
